Bricklin Cafe Bar: one of the most hipster cafes in Penang

With an eclectic yet seamless mix of colonial, rustic Asian and modern city culture, Penang has countless hipster spots around the state. These include street art murals, gentrified buildings and of course, cafes. Bricklin Cafe Bar at Hin Bus Depot happens to be all three-in-one: a cafe situated in a now-defunct but refurbished bus depot, decked in larger-than-life wall murals and art installations. Together, they make Bricklin Cafe Bar one of the most hipster cafes in Penang you should definitely visit.

Upon first glance, Hin Bus Depot looks like the last place you’d find a cafe. But that’s exactly what being hipster is: going against the grain of expectations and mainstream culture (trust me, I’m a sociologist).

I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Bricklin’s coffees (ranging from about RM8 – 15 or SGD$2.70 – $5) are exceptionally amazing, but they are pretty decent like most coffees you’d find in Penang. The ambience and Scandinavian aesthetic of the place, however, make the chill cafe experience complete. In fact, I found myself so at ease that I ended up spending two hours there (or maybe that’s just one of the perks on going on a solo trip).

Then again, most decent cafes have a nice aesthetic, so what sets Bricklin apart? Let’s start with its backyard.

I mean… I don’t even know what this is, but it looks like something you’d find in the backdrop of an influencer’s Instagram photo.

Same for this.

As aforementioned, you’ll also find murals around all its walls, so while you’re at it, snap away!

If you’re into rustic backdrops, the signage at its front porch might also do the trick.

Turns out they also have weekend markets at the now-defunct bus depot. Is anyone else getting some serious Aussie vibes? Cause I am.

Lastly, as with all hipsters who are high in cultural capital, the good people at Bricklin and Hin Bus Depot offer a series of workshops and classes for all who wish to up their cultural game.

If there’s one take-home point for you, it’s that because Bricklin is located at Hin Bus Depot that’s used as an art and event space, what you get on your visit is more than just a good cuppa – you get the entire hipster experience.
